Cavity Wall Insulation in St Helens and Newton-le-Willows

Cavity Wall Insulation in St Helens and Newton-le-Willows

St Helens and Newton-le-Willows have a lot of cavity-walled housing — inter-war semis, post-war council-built estates and plenty of 1960s–80s private homes. A surprising number still have empty cavities, or were filled years ago with material that’s no longer doing its job.

Is your cavity already filled?

A few ways to tell:

  • Look for drill holes. Filled walls usually have a regular pattern of small, filled holes in the mortar joints, roughly a metre apart.
  • Check the brick pattern. Cavity walls usually show only the long sides of the bricks. Solid walls often show alternating long sides and short ends.
  • Measure the wall at a window or door. A cavity wall is typically around 260mm or more thick.
  • Ask. If you bought the house, insulation work may be mentioned in your survey or paperwork.

If you’re not sure, a survey will tell you — we can check the cavity directly.

Why we use EPS bead

Our cavity wall insulation uses EPS bead — small polystyrene beads bonded together as they fill the cavity. Compared with blown fibre:

  • the beads don’t absorb water, so they don’t carry damp across the cavity
  • they fill evenly and don’t settle, leaving no cold spots
  • they can improve a wall’s U-value by up to 70%
  • installation needs fewer, smaller holes, and is usually done in a day

When old insulation is the problem

Some homes in the area were filled under past schemes with fibre that has since got wet or slumped. Signs include damp patches on the inside of outside walls, mould in corners and walls that feel cold even though they’re supposedly insulated. In those cases the old material can be extracted and the cavity refilled properly — we offer both removal and new installation.

Exposed walls

Gable ends and walls facing the prevailing weather take the brunt of the rain. Where walls are very exposed, we’ll look at the condition of the brickwork and pointing first, and in some cases recommend a breathable ProPerla wall coating to keep the outer leaf dry.

Common questions

Is there any mess inside? No — the work is done entirely from outside.

How much will I save? It depends on the house, but up to 25% of heat can be lost through uninsulated walls, so it’s usually a worthwhile improvement.
