Conservatory Too Cold in Winter? Insulating a Conservatory Roof in Warrington

Ask anyone with a polycarbonate or glass-roofed conservatory and you’ll hear the same story: lovely for a few weeks in spring, unbearable in a heatwave and freezing from October onwards. In practice that means it becomes a storage room for half the year.

The roof is almost always the culprit. Here’s why, and what can be done.

Why the roof is the problem

A conservatory roof is a huge surface with very little insulation value. In winter, the warm air in the room rises straight to the coldest surface in the house and the heat goes with it. In summer, the same roof lets in solar heat with nowhere to go.

Turning up the heating doesn’t solve it — you just pay to warm the sky. Blinds help a little with glare but do almost nothing for heat loss.

Insulating the roof

The most effective fix is to insulate the roof itself, usually by creating an insulated ceiling inside. Because conservatory roofs are lightweight and there’s limited depth to work with, thin high-performance materials make sense.

multi foil insulation is commonly used here. Its reflective foil layers reflect heat back into the room in winter and reflect solar heat away in summer — which is exactly the problem a conservatory has in both seasons. It’s lightweight, which matters on a roof structure that was never designed to carry a heavy load, and it has built-in vapour control to stop condensation forming.

Finished with a plasterboard or panelled ceiling and spotlights, the room stops feeling like a greenhouse and starts feeling like part of the house.

What about the walls and floor?

Once the roof is sorted, the dwarf walls and floor become the next priority. Low brick walls with an unfilled cavity can sometimes be treated with cavity wall insulation, and draughts around the base and doors are worth sealing.

Things to check first

Before any work, we look at the roof structure to make sure it’s sound and can take the new ceiling, and check whether there’s any existing damp or leak. Depending on the extent of the work, building regulations may also apply — we’ll explain what applies to your conservatory at the survey.

Common questions

Will the room be darker? It will have a solid ceiling instead of a clear one, but most people find it far more comfortable, and you can add roof lights or spotlights.

Will it stop condensation? A properly installed vapour control layer, combined with sensible ventilation, deals with most conservatory condensation.
