Choosing an Insulation Installer in Warrington: 8 Questions to Ask

Insulation is one of those trades where the quality of the work is invisible the moment it’s finished. Once the loft is filled or the cavity is injected, you can’t see whether it was done properly — you find out over the following winters, or when a surveyor takes a look.

That makes choosing who does it unusually important. Here are eight questions worth asking any installer in Warrington before you commit.

1. Will you survey the property before quoting?

A price given over the phone from your postcode and the number of bedrooms is a guess. Cavity width, existing fill, wall condition, roof construction and exposure all change the answer. If nobody wants to look at the house, that tells you something.

2. What will you do if my property isn’t suitable?

The right answer is “we’ll tell you”. Not every home should have its cavity filled — a bridged cavity, a badly exposed elevation or defective outer brickwork can all be reasons to say no. An installer who has never turned a job down is an installer who doesn’t check.

3. Is there already insulation in there, and how do you know?

For cavity walls, the answer should involve a borescope inspection rather than an assumption based on the property’s age. A great many homes were filled decades ago with material that has since slumped, leaving the top of the wall bare.

4. How will you handle ventilation?

This is the question that separates people who understand buildings from people who fit product. Eaves must stay clear, airbricks must stay clear, and a roof void needs to breathe. Insulation that blocks ventilation swaps a cold house for a damp one.

5. What’s the guarantee, and what does it actually cover?

6. Who is actually doing the work?

Some national operators sell the job and subcontract it to whoever is available. Ask whether the people who surveyed will be the people on site, and how long they’ve been doing this particular type of work.
